1999

Democracy Returns

Mohammed Alabi Lawal emerged as the first elected governor of Kwara State under Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, marking the return of civilian democratic rule after years of military administration.

2003

Saraki Emerges

Bukola Saraki defeated the incumbent Mohammed Lawal to become governor on the platform of the PDP. His emergence marked the beginning of a new era of political dominance that would shape Kwara politics for the next 16 years.

2007

Saraki Consolidates

Bukola Saraki secured a second term as governor, further strengthening the political structure around the PDP and establishing the Saraki political family as a formidable force in Kwara.

2011

Ahmed Succeeds Saraki

Abdulfatah Ahmed, backed by Saraki and the PDP, succeeded Saraki as governor. Saraki moved to the Senate, where he would later become Senate President, while his political influence in Kwara remained significant.

2015

APC Gains Ground

The APC made significant electoral gains in Kwara and across Nigeria, but the PDP retained control of the governorship, with Abdulfatah Ahmed securing a second term. The result foreshadowed the major political realignment that would follow.

2018

Political Realignment

Bukola Saraki's return to the PDP after leaving the APC intensified political realignment in Kwara. Opposition forces increasingly mobilised around a growing demand for political change.

2019

Ó Tó Gẹ́

Kwara experienced one of the most dramatic political shifts in its history. The Ó Tó Gẹ́ movement swept through the state, contributing to the defeat of the PDP establishment and the emergence of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as governor. The election effectively ended the Saraki family's long-standing dominance of Kwara politics.

2023

APC Retains Power

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq secured a second term as governor, defeating the PDP candidate Shuaibu Yaman Abdullahi. The result reinforced the APC's hold on the governorship and set the stage for another major political contest in 2027.

2026

New Alignments

As the 2027 election approaches, Kwara enters another period of political realignment. Defections, new coalitions, opposition restructuring, emerging candidates and debates over zoning are reshaping the political landscape.

2027

The Next Chapter

The next governorship election will test the durability of the political order established in 2019. Will the existing political structure endure, or will Kwara witness another major realignment? The people will decide.
